Title : Terminator seed technology: Implications for sustainable agriculture and crop biodiversity
Abstract:
Terminator Seed Technology, also called Genetic Use Restriction Technology or GURTs, is a big innovation in agricultural biotechnology. It helps control how long seeds can grow into new plants. This technology uses special molecular methods to stop second-generation seeds from growing, which helps protect hybrid crops and the rights of the people who create the seeds. There are some good things about GURTs, like making crops more uniform, getting better harvests, and managing seeds more easily for businesses. But there are also worries about how it affects the environment and society. Some people are concerned that it might reduce farmers’ ability to save seeds, harm the variety of seeds available, and raise ethical questions about using genetically modified plants. This review looks at how Terminator Technology works at the molecular level, how it was developed, and how it's used today in farming. It also considers the environmental effects and challenges of using GURTs on a large scale. By looking at recent research, this work tries to find a balance between using new technology and being responsible with the environment. The summary shows the need for smart policies, careful ethical checks, and more research to make sure biotechnology helps agriculture in a sustainable way. Sharing this summary at the eCOMBAS 2.0 conference is meant to start conversations about how advanced plant biotechnology can support farming that's both good for the environment and fair for people
