Plant Cell Wall

The structure, growth, and development of a plant are significantly influenced by the plant cell wall. It is a thick covering that surrounds the plant cell and gives it mechanical support, protection, and shape. It is hard and semi-permeable. It mostly consists of proteins, pectins, cellulose, and hemicellulose. A polysaccharide comprised of glucose molecules, cellulose is a solid, insoluble fibre. Hemicellulose, which serves as a matrix for cellulose fibres, is composed of a variety of polysaccharides and proteins. Polysaccharides called pectins aid in the adhesion of cell walls to other proteins and to one another. Between the cellulose and hemicellulose, proteins, including xyloglucan, form a network that aids in stabilising the cell wall structure. In addition, lignin, a substance that holds the plant cell wall together and gives it strength and stiffness, is present in the cell wall of the plant. The exchange of materials between cells inside a plant depends on the cell wall. It has pores that let specific chemicals enter or leave the cell. Additionally, the cell wall affects how plants react to their surroundings.
