Xylem

Xylem is the vascular tissue in plants that transports water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and other parts of the plant. It is composed of specialized cells that are arranged in chains and form a continuous tube. Xylem helps to maintain the water balance of the plant and is essential for the transport of water, minerals, and other substances. Xylem also plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis, which is the process by which plants use sunlight energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into energy-rich molecules. Xylem is composed of several cell types, including tracheids, vessel elements, and xylem parenchyma cells. Tracheids are long, narrow cells that form a continuous tube, while vessel elements are composed of many small cells that form a larger tube. Xylem parenchyma cells are cells that store and transport substances. Together, these cells make up the xylem, which is essential for the transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant.
